My Stepdad, Mike

If I had to choose a few words to describe him
I’d say he was salt of the earth.
In that he was an honest
and gentle human being,
With a love for everyone and everything;
He was smart, especially with math and farm equipment;
He was inquisitive;
He had a mild-mannered disposition;
A jokester
Who never knew a stranger;
He loved chocolate
And eating breakfast with his parents when they were alive;
He loved his mom’s cooking
And large family dinners;
He had a strong physique;
He wore a 2XL shirt, and he liked the button-down kind;
His hands were large and worked-
Much like his heart;
He raised my niece (Amber) as his own daughter,
And he spoiled my kids;
He always helped out with the horses
Or Cael’s 4H pigs;
He called Rynn, Rynnie;
He’d say,
“Whatever Rynnie wants, Rynnie gets.”
Corbyn drove him around on the 4-wheeler for hours;
They could talk him into anything,
Like making them sweet tea every time they asked for it;
He’d stop working and just play with them,
He was definitely a kid at heart;
He liked to drive slow, just like he took life-
In stride…
Easy going,
Never in a rush;
His mom gave him a round tuit once
He always said he’d get around to it
And eventually….
He did,
But his priorities were his own
And were more about
Finding laughter in little things
By way of telling corny jokes;
Always a “Yes, Dear” to my mother’s eagerness;
He was a supportive husband and best friend to her for 28 years;
Slow to anger, if ever he got angry
I never really saw it…
He was patient,
He was kind, but not a push over-
He could stand his ground when needed;
He loved to farm;
He loved to have fun;
He loved being around kids,
And eating ice cream;
He helped me move to college then home again;
He came and dumped mouse traps for me when I needed;
He caught a snake that once found its way into my kitchen
And gently let it go by the ditch;
On a moment’s notice, he was always there-
To help with anything;
He talked to animals;
He believed in, and had a relationship with God;
He stopped to smell the flowers;
He could get lost for days in tractor supply or tool stores,
And loved spending time at auctions that held farming equipment;
He enjoyed the times spent with friends out shooting prairie dogs in the fields;
He treasured hunting season because it brought old friends and family to visit;
He always asked you how you were doing,
But more importantly,
He’d listen to the response given;
He loved to read,
And play cards,
And go for walks,
And watch Amber compete in rodeos,
And drive around with my mom;
He was the most patient man,
Full of integrity,
A beautiful soul;
He was salt of the earth.
